Steven has been fantastic ever since I was given the job. My first thought was to contact him and since then he hasn’t put a foot wrong as a captain, a person or a player. He’s playing like a captain should, as one of the best players in the tournament.

In my opinion he’s the man who merits this award or distinction. I know him as a player and I know him as a person. I know how committed he is to the England cause and he was delighted last night when I told him of my decision. And I shall be counting on him to help me as much as he possibly can to build the type of team unity and the type of environment that’s going to be very necessary to thrive in an important tournament.

I owe a lot to Roy because he gave me my Liverpool debut. He is a good manager and although things didn’t work out for him here it wasn’t just him to blame. There were a lot of us to blame as well because we weren’t producing the performances on the pitch. He’s a top man and a top manager, and it’s a great achievement for him.
