I finally got a chance to watch a replay of the game and I’m delighted with the fact that we not only managed to win at Anfield but we also managed to score 3 or more goals. Long may it continue.
We started the half really well. I think the team remembered the last time we played Brighton (during the Carling Cup and we won 2-1) and how that wasn’t an easy game so we decided to start off bright and try to get an early goal. That came within 5 minutes into the game when Martin Skrtel nodded home Steven Gerrard’s corner from close range.

It was a good goal and Skrtel continues to be a threat at set pieces. I think this also helped by teh fact that so many defenders were/are focused on Andy Carroll they forget about our other “big men” which is fine by me.

Brighton then pulled one back with a great free-kick that ended up in the bottom corner and out of Pepe Reina’s reach. We fell a little flat after Brighton equalised as our passes became clumsy and we seemed to be giving Brighton a chance to push themselves further into the game. We did however continue to be dangerous on set pieces and we benefited from that right at the end of half time when Glen Johnson nodded towards goal from a corner and a Brighton defender cleared the ball off his own man resulting in an own goal.

The second half began and we once again started really well. Our movement seemed better and our passing in the final third was causing some problems. (I have to mention Stewart Downing here as he seemed to find space on that left hand side all game and he kept putting in really good crosses for our strikers. Now if he could only replicate that during league games and he may just make me eat my words). Downing was at the center of our 3rd goal as Luis Suarez (who was a threat all game and was unlucky not to have more goals) and Gerrard linked together before Downing was set free out wide. He crossed it low and hard into the box and Carroll smashed it in from 12 yards out. It was a good goal and the build play behind it was great as well.

We kept pushing for more goals (which again is great to see) and were rewarded again when Steven Gerrard managed to find himself free after a counter. His first shot was saved by the keeper before his rebound was put in again by a Brighton defender.

(Liam Bridcutt, above, ended up with 2 own goals to his name).
Three minutes later and we had a fifth. A dangerous cross was placed into the Brighton box before one of their defenders decided it was a good idea to juggle the ball in front of his goal. He then proceeded to knock it into his own net for Liverpool’s 5th and Brighton’s 3rd own goal of the night.
Luis Suarez then had a chance to score from the penalty spot after a great build up which ended when Dirk Kuyt was brought down in the box. Kenny decided Luis should take it (sentimental reasons) and he proceeded to miss with a poor attempt. (I had my head in my hands then). Kuyt also had a chance to add to the total when he drifted free in the box during a corner and headed against the bar.
Lucky for him, he managed to atone for the miss when another dangerous cross was placed in the box. Carroll rose above his defender and nodded it across goal for Suarez to head in from close range.

He immediately pointed towards Carroll who helped set up his goal.

MOTM: Andy Carroll. He had a great game and should’ve had more than the one goal to his name. His performances are getting better and better and we’re beginning to see signs of his previous Newcastle form. Good for him.
